British Summertime is now here and that means the Outdoor Season is nearly upon us so those of you who play outdoors start checking your wets, scarves, gloves, towels etc. - you're sure to need them!!
I am very pleased to report that Mervyn Gleeson is now our Services Director and we all wish him well in this appointment.  We only lack a Bar Director on the Management Committee so how about it - volunteers step forward and see John Stacey for information.
Sunday March 16th was Pink Day at the Club when we all wore a touch of pink to support Women -v- Cancer. Tony Wright was the pinkest of all and judged to be the best dressed man with his pink trousers, pink satin blouse and curly pink wig with Liz Sims our best dressed lady. A great afternoon was had by all with lots of fun and laughter.  In all we raised £591. by means of a spider, various fines for touchers, woods or jack in ditch, raffle, pennies in the pottie, a £100. donation from the Club and donations from members unable to be there on the day.  Jan Lovegrove was highly delighted and this has made a significant contribution towards her target.  If you visit her website ( you can keep up to date with her progress.
This month has seen the closing stages of our Club Competitions and the running order for the finals is now listed in the Clubhouse.  The men's triples competition will be played on Friday evening 11th April and the remaining finals on Saturday 12th April commencing at 10 a.m. so come along and give support to our worthy finalists - cheer them on and create some atmosphere.  Coffee etc. and food will be available on Saturday morning to keep everyone going.  The presentation of the prizes, preceded by a 2 course meal will take place in the evening at 6 p.m.  and details are now on the match board.
The Indoor Leagues are now almost completed and the Champion of Champions League competition will be played on Wednesday 16th April - details of draw and start time will be posted in the Clubhouse soon.
Registration for next year's leagues is now well under way so League Captains please make sure your forms are in by the closing date - 11th April.   This may seem to be early to be thinking about next year already but a lot of work has to be done to collect and collate the necessary information in order for the Yearbook to be prepared for printing.  There are a few teams who are looking for players so if you would like to be in a league, please add your name to the forms at the back of the indoor rink. Or, how about forming your own league team? We do have room for more teams in all of the evening leagues and also the Monday Midday League. Give it a go - new faces are most welcome and you will get to meet a lot more members.  If you are interested, please contact any of the League Secretaries or an Indoor Committee Member (names in this year's blue handbook) who will be only too pleased to help and advise you.
We hosted the Ladies Indoor County Finals at the end of March and the Club was represented by Jacky Gray and Jane Murphy who reached the pairs final and together with Julie Jackson were also in the Triples final. They were successful in both games - Jacky and Jane overcoming a team from Banbury Cross in the pairs 21-15 and together with Julie defeating a triples from Chipping Norton  21-10.   Very well done the 3 J's!  Yours truly reached the Singles Final where I played Lorraine Serjeant from Carterton and after a leapfrogging first half of the game, I won 21-12.  Dare I say "Well done me!!!
We also hosted the Men's Indoor County Fours Final where Brian Eastgate, Adie Kemish, Graham Kerr and Othman Sharif played Mark Sykes' team from Banbury.  Mark's team proved too strong for our lads but well done all of you for reaching the final.
This coming Saturday, April 5th sees the last of the Indoor Season's very popular Saturday Club Nights where the entertainment will be Cody playing and singing tunes from the 60's, 70's and 80's.  The next Club Night will be a BBQ on Friday 6th June.  (Note change of evening for the Summer).
The Outdoor Fixture Book is now available from the office for Outdoor Members and the greens will be open on Saturday 19th April for those wishing to make an early start to the Season. (The Club is closed on Easter Sunday 20th April).  The official opening of the greens is on Sunday 27th April with a Bowls Drive for the Ladies and a game for the Men followed by a meal afterwards.  Lists are up on the Matchboard for those wishing to take part.
A Redneck Love Poem

Susie Lee done fell in love, she planned to marry Joe
She was so happy 'bout it all, she told her Pappy so.
Pappy told her "Susie gal, you'll have to find another.
I'd just as soon your Ma don't know, but Joe is your half brother.
So Susie  set aside her Joe and planned to marry Will,
But after telling Pappy this, he said "There's trouble still.
You can't wed Will my gal and please don't tell your Mother,
But Will and Joe, and several more I know is your half brother.
But Mama knew and said "My child, just do what makes you happy.
Marry Will or marry Joe, you ain't no kin to Pappy.

Thank you all for your good wishes and words of encouragement both before and after my election as President of Oxford City and County Bowls Club on 13th February.  As I said at the Club’s AGM, it is a great honour to be your President.  I intend to carry on Alan’s good work and I congratulate him on an excellent year as our President.
As regards this Newsletter, I will continue with the “Prattle” and hope I will be as eloquent, informative and entertaining as Alan has been.  To this end, I would be very grateful if you would keep me informed of what has gone on, what is going on and what will be going on so that I may attend and support where appropriate. Please also let me know of your achievements, other people’s achievements and anything else you think may be of interest to our members so that I have something to write about!  Don’t forget to blow your own trumpet – don’t wait for someone to blow it for you, it may not happen and you will then be disappointed if you are not mentioned in dispatches.
I am very pleased to report that out of the 5 Director vacancies, 3 were filled at the AGM.    The new Directors are as follows :-
Health & Safety Director     -     Tony Wright
                        Projects Director                -     Colin Pollard
                        Maintenance Director          -     Alan Keen
Our grateful thanks to these gentlemen who will now give much needed support for our Management Team who have been under pressure for some time trying to double up on the various vacant positions.   We do, however, still need a Services Director and a Bar Director so if anyone out there feels they may be able to take on either of these jobs, please contact Harold Winstone or John Stacey to find out what it would entail.
John and I have been the Captains for this month’s games which have been well supported making our task that much easier.  So thank you everyone.   I have been very pleased to see that some new names have appeared on the match sheets, so come on the rest of you, take the plunge, try the water, meet more members - we would like to get to know you too (after all there are some 450 of us!) - you will be pleasantly surprised.
The Carterton match at the beginning of the month was cancelled by them and another Ladies –v- Gents match was arranged.  Unfortunately in the end, there were not enough ladies to make this possible and so we had a mixed game instead.  A most enjoyable game was had by all.  Again we met some new faces which was great so keep coming forward and make yourselves known.
A good opportunity for you to do this will be on Sunday March 16th when we are having a Charity Match in lieu of the Northampton game which has been cancelled by them.  Funds raised on the day are for three Cancer Charities which are being supported by Jan Lovegrove. Jan is going to China in September to take part in a cycle challenge to raise further money for these worthy causes.  The challenge is to cycle 279 miles in 5 days through the Beijing Province of China. Phew!  Visit to find out more.
Dress for this Match is casual to include something pink. So gentlemen look out your pink socks, shirts etc and join in the fun.
This month’s Captains - Phil Woodville and Jan Lovegrove -  would greatly  appreciate your continued support for the last few matches of the season, particularly the two men’s matches on March 6th (Hagbourne – evening)  and March 8th (Royal Household) as at the time of writing this, we still needed quite a few more players.
On Saturday lst March we had our last ever fixture with Broomwade Bowls Club.  This fixture has been on our indoor calendar for many a long year (well over 20 years) despite the fact that they were an Outdoor Club only.   Sadly, through circumstances beyond their control  and after 60 years in existence, they have had to close their doors.
Saturday lst March was well attended again and saw a welcome return visit of Far From Home - an Irish Folk Group.  Next month’s entertainment will be Cody, a Singer/Guitarist, and will be on Saturday 5th April.  This will be the last Saturday Club Night of this indoor season. During the Summer there will be two or three BBQ’s with entertainment to be held on a Friday evening, the first one being on 6th June.  Watch this space for more details and future dates.
These are scheduled to take place at our Club on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th March.  The various competitions are well underway and a number of our ladies are expected to reach the finals.  Keep your eyes on the notice board to your left as you come in the main door for times and running order and come along to support the finalists.
This is being held on Saturday 12th April with the Annual Prize Giving and Social following on after the Finals.  There will be a normal 2 course Club meal prior to the presentation of the prizes and a notice will shortly be posted with fuller details.  So mark your diaries now folks and come and join us.
Have you heard this one:-
While waiting to see my Doctor, a middle aged man came in bent over at the waist relying heavily upon his wife’s support to get into the Doctor’s Waiting Room.
A nearby patient also waiting, watched in sympathy.
“Arthritis with complications?” she asked.
The wife shook her head and replied “No, do it yourself with concrete blocks!!!”
Sounds familiar!!!
President Margaret.
