Wales Snatch title from England.

Oxford City & County Bowls Club hosted the 2015 British Isles Junior U25s Internationals this weekend and treated the 500 plus crowd to a festival of bowls

England narrowly missed out on retaining the British Isles Bowls Council Junior International Series at the weekend by just two shots at Oxford City & County BC,

England.

A 24-shot victory against Scotland on Saturday morning gave the England team, which included 11 new caps, the ideal start, while Wales secured a 17-shot

victory over Ireland.

The afternoon saw England draw 121-121 with Wales, despite being almost 30-shots behind with less than 20 ends to play over the six rinks. England Captain

Jamie Walker led by example with four perfect bowls on the final two ends under pressure. The remarkable fight back was also aided by Martin Heitzman's rink

securing 10 unanswered shots on the final three ends, a count of six on Alex Walton's rink on his 21st end and a pickup of five shots on Ryan Atkins' 20thend.

The draw with Wales gave England a narrow seven-shot lead over them heading into Sunday's final session against Ireland. Finishing a few ends in front, Wales

defeated Scotland by 24-shots, giving England the knowledge that a 17-shot victory over Ireland would ensure that the Sealy Trophy would be retained. With just

one end to play, England needed to pick up four shots on Ben Render's rink to secure the 17-shot victory to take the title, however the Ireland back-end players

reduced the count with every bowl, giving England just the two shots to secure a 15-shot victory - losing the Series on shots difference to Wales by just two

shots.

PRESIDENT'S DAY - SUNDAY 9th AUGUST 2015

I was pleased that so many of you turned out for my President's day. I invited rinks from Banbury Central, Kidlington, Kingston Bagpuiize, Watlington and Witney Town. Together with other club members it made a match of eight rinks. My team won but on the day I think it was the game of bowls that was the winner.

We had a very good meal provided by Jenny and her team. The spider was won by Margaret Stacey and with the raffle we raised £ 230.00 for Macmillan Cancer Support. I must thank my wife Liz for all her hard work during the day and for her support during the season so far.

Latest News & Gossip From The Front Line

BUSY TIMES - EXCITING TIMES - AND ITS ALL HAPPENING AT OCCBC.

So with the outdoor season only with us for a few more weeks - culminating in the usual hectic activities getting to see who won what etc and the ensuant Presentation Dinner to round things off….and thats just for starters, for we must also remember that our Summer Section Indoor competitions are also reaching their climax….much to look forward to.

We are now delighted to announce a link with Oxford United FC - as part of their Community Programme - which will bring together people of all sports and encouraging people to take an active part if at all possible. To this end we have had several lunches and meetings with Darryl Eales (Chairman OUFC) Mark Ashton (CEO) Cheryl (PA to Directors) and Caroline Robbins (Community Operations Director), to move this worthwhile enterprise further - and also enabling us to be part of the wider picture which hopefully will benefit many more youngsters and adults in the area.

9th SEPTEMBER….a note for your diaries.

To get us started, we will be holding a OPEN DAY with Oxford United FC at Oxford City and County Bowls Club, where the owners, CEO, Manager, players and staff will all join in what we know will be a fun event….nows your chance to meet, chat and mix and pit your skills with them all on the Bowls Green - yep, for most people it will be their first taste of what it is all about - our coaches will be there to give a helping hand!  The day starts around 3pm and will go on until about 8pm (we will supply all equipment - but it would help us for those who 'will have a go' if they would wear flat shoes. If it is wet on the day, we do have the luxury of both Indoor and Outdoor Rinks).  OUFC will be presenting prizes……..

We are also delighted that Stewart Donald who owns Bridle and Eastleigh FC as well as being major sponsors to both us and OUFC, will also be coming along.

The evening will conclude with a FANS FORUM, when Darryl, Mark and Michael Appleton will be in the firing line to answer all your questions about anything OUFC.

The Bar and Kitchen will be open throughout………so, if you are coming straight from work,  we will have hot and cold food available.

BBC Radio Oxford will be covering this event……Rosemary Phelps, our Coaching director, will be speaking with Jerome Sale on Rad Oxford at halftime during OUFC v Bristol Rovers, to further promote their Community Program - and our Open Day.

For info, I have copied and pasted a draft copy of a piece written by OUFC which will be in their programme for the match against Yeovil…….hopefully it will further paint the picture we are all trying to achieve…….thus:

Balls of All Sorts

We're about more than just football; the Oxford United Community Trust is about trying to engage people from across Oxfordshire in positive activities of any kind, with balls of all shapes and sizes and some with no balls at all.

As hinted at last week, one of the activities we're working to promote and engage people in is bowls. Sometimes seen as an old man's game this sport is hugely undersold. Hosted by the City and County Bowls Club Darryl Eales, Chairman, Mark Ashton, CEO and Caroline Robbins, Operations Director have all had a go and let us tell you, it requires some serious skill to get those weighted balls to where you want them to be but it's brilliant fun working out how to do it.

To help us get our eye in the Bowls Club have very kindly offered to host an open evening on the 9th September.

From 3pm children, young people, parents and careers are welcome to come to the club and have a go, get some expert tips from Rosemary, the in house coach at the Bowls Club and see Olly and Olivia give it their best shot too.

At 5.30pm anyone is welcome to come along and try their hand. Fans are invited to enter teams of 3 or 4 people in a friendly competition with prizes available from Oxford United and the Bowls Club. Rosemary will be on hand to provide tips and Oxford United players and staff will be joining teams giving fans the opportunity to really get to know the names and faces of both the Club and the Community Trust.

Once prizes have been awarded the City and County Bowls Club have kindly agreed to host an Oxford Fans Forum, giving fans the chance to ask us any questions you might have. With a bar and kitchen open serving food and drink throughout the evening there's not much more you could ask for.

We're all really excited about the event and the chance to get people active in something a little different. Darryl said,

'With the development of the Community Trust and our aim to increase participation across various sports and activities we're thrilled to be working in partnership with the City and County Bowls Club to offer something different. The Club have been brilliant in supporting us to pull this event together and we can't thank them enough for offering us a real opportunity to get to know fans in a social and friendly environment, bringing a little taste of our Austria tour back to Oxford.'

If you would like to enter a team and have your chance to play with and alongside some of our players and staff please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your team name and team member names.

11th SEPTEMBER………

The BBC Radio Oxford Breakfast Programme (7am - 9am) will be held at City and County….where we will be attempting to introduce Ross Heaton to the game of Bowls - and also to tell you something about another great event we are hosting the following day………………….and that relates to the UK Under 25 International Series - a chance for us all to witness the very best that England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland can offer. A must see.

BBC Radio Oxford will be covering this event too.

12th AND 13TH SEPTEMBER…….

…..this is when the Under 25's show us what it is all about………..we are expecting a good crowd, so my advice is to arrive early.

AND SO MUCH MORE TO LOOK FORWARD TO……

Our Indoor Season gets going in a few weeks time……..and we welcome back to our fold, so many of our regular members whose other clubs do not have an indoor rink………we have quite a healthy fixture list this coming season and the Members Indoor Year Book will be sent out to you all in a few days - so you will be able to get notice of all up-coming fixtures et al, including our in-house leagues……worth mentioning that last year we had a total of 89 teams competing on the various days and there seems to be a similar number this season.  A special mention to Vera Logue who does such a sterling job in this respect……as do so many others.

Finally a mention of our Web-Master, Merv Gleeson for his tireless work making this Web-Site work - our readership is quite staggering…..but I am sure Merv would be delighted to hear from anyone who wants to make a contribution…….

Happy Bowling my friends…..and above all, have fun.

View from the Bank

GENERAL CLUB SCENE…...
So now we are well into the summer season and things go on at apace……..Merv, our Web Master is certainly keeping us afloat with many things - especially the results of matches….aided by some great photo's…..and our President, Vic Bye making a valuable contribution too.

Now if I may refer to more everyday matters….perhaps to advise on some of the activities which sometimes can go unnoticed…..or should I say, forgotten.

Whereas our outdoor season is now in full flow, we shouldn't forget the ever increasing number of members who like to play indoors the whole year round……there are a couple of organised 'roll-ups' weekly (Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10.00am) - just turn up - while many make their own arrangements with friends to meet up and have a game - there's plenty of space for all….so come along and join in!

On the subject of 'Indoor", our ever popular Indoor Wednesday Morning Indoor League is in full flow and ever popular……speaking with Geoff Rawnsley who runs the show he tell me that sometimes teams do lose a player for varying reasons……so if you would like to play in a team I know Geoff would be pleased to hear from you and fit you in when a vacancy occurs - send me an email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and I will pass your name on to Geoff..

Returning to 'Outdoor"….well this season has seen the birth of our Wednesday Outdoor Triples League (yep, we run the two together)……..very ably run by Sandy and David Nash. Not sure whether they have any of the teams requiring an individual replacement this season, but if you should be interested, send me an email and I will pass on your details to Sandy and David.  Incidentally, they are now taking bookings for teams to play in the 2016 season…..6 people are required for a team but if you want to play as an individual, I know Sandy/David would be able to slot you in somewhere.

COACHING…….
Well, this something we think we excel at…..Rosemary, Graham and Liz, really do put in a shift on varying days of the week……….as they say, when you enjoy something it is not a chore.  For those of you who are new to the game, come along…..on Fridays at 6pm we hold friendly coaching/individual 'welcome to the game' sessions…….its great fun - just turn up - casual dress ok and we supply all equipment…………

Our group of youngsters, ranging  from 8 to 15 years old, come to to coaching on SATURDAY MORNINGS in a relaxed and fun atmosphere.  They are becoming skilled young bowlers.

The Saturday Youngsters Group has been continuing for eleven years. Two of our earlier players have recently had an England Under 25 Trial and several of our earlier players belong to the County Under 25's teams and two have played in the National Under 25s Finals ladies and men's competitions.

We are always happy for young people aged 8 or over to come and join us.. We start at 10.00 am and all equipment is available and there is no charge for lessons.

Incidentally…..during a recent session, Kathy Hawes invited one of our youngsters to join her for a few ends……..he was thrilled……great stuff Kathy!

OPEN DAY……
Our last Open Day got off to a slow start - mainly due to the inclement weather……..but the sun started to shine and we were more than pleased with the eventual  turn out….so many new faces 'had a go, had a chat…and as we boast, viewed the best kept secret in Oxford'……..can we persuade those of you who have not been to see us yet, to pay us a visit…..it would be our pleasure.

OCCBC on RADIO OXFORD……..
Colin Pollard and Rosemary Phelps were the guests of Danny Cox on the Radio Oxford Saturday Sports programme recently………if you want to listen to it, I think it is available for 28days after broadcast…..just go to Saturday 27th June (Danny Cox)…….2pm show…..and its about 45minutes in….well worth a listen.

BOWLS ENGLAND HOME INTERNATIONAL SERIES…….
Under the auspices of our President Vic Bye, plans are now well afoot to ensure that the Under 25 England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland  International series go off smoothly. Vic has assembled a great team around him…..much work to do! Practice session is on Friday 11th September while the real action gets under way on the the 12th and 13th September……..please make a note in your diaries.

SOCIAL MEMBERSHIPS…..
Our social membership is strong and many more are joining…….a great way to enjoy to comforts and friendliness of our club.  I notice our Snooker and Billiard players are increasing in numbers. Terry Gripe does a great job running this show.  Anyone for whist?….well, thats here too!

TO THOSE WHO GO UN-NOTICED……
There are so many people who keep our club running and it is to them I would like to say, that the best compliments anyone can have, are the ones they never hear………I can assure them that there are many…….We as a club are fortunate in this respect.

OUR WEB-SITE……
For those who have not read it recently, there are many new features…….if any of you would like to contribute, I am sure Merv would be pleased to hear from you.

Happy Bowling my friends.

TWO women's triples from Oxford City & County have qualified for the National Championships at  Leamington Spa in August.

Donna Knight, Gail Gilkes and Katherine Hawes had a close-fought battle with Caroline Campion's team in  the quarter-final sneaking a threeshot victory.

But it was more clear-cut in the last four clash, as they beating the host club's triple, skipped by        Angie Ives, by 11 shots.

Both go on to represent Oxfordshire next month.

PRESIDENTS PRATTLE - July 2015

Club Matches

We recently hosted touring teams from Desborough (Northampton) and Torbay.

In the match with Desborough over the ten rinks the score was tied at 157 shots each. It seemed that everybody enjoyed the day with some just managing to finish before the heavy shower.

The buffet put on by Jenny and her team went down well, with all the players and visitors.

Our thanks go to The Oxford and Abingdon bowls clubs for supplying a rink for this match.

The next day we were hosts to the Torbay Tourists which again provided an enjoyable game with City & County winning by 171 to 140 shots.

Ladies County Competitions

Congratulations to the following members for qualifying to play at Leamington:

2 Wood Singles

Jeanette Berry and Carol Gaskins

Pairs

Katherine Hawes and Donna Knight

Triples

Katherine Hawes, Donna Knight and Gail Gilkes

Vicky Harrison, Margaret Stacey and Jackie Gray

Congratulations also to Katherine Hawes for helping England retain British Isles Women's Bowls Council international team title.

In the men's county competitions we do have any players who will play in the finals at Leamington.

Club Outing

This year we went to Clevedon. Before the match we had a buffet lunch on the front at Weston Super Mare. Once again the buffet was provided by Chris and Gerry McGrath of The Kings Arms, The Moors, Kidlington which was enjoyed by everyone.

There was some confusion as Clevedon were only expecting to play 5 rinks but we had six.

However as usual our Captain Bryan Flitter managed to overcome this by getting two of their players to join in and play a triple. The match was won by City & County.

Our thanks to Helen Kingsley and Colin Pollard for organising such a wonderful day.
