MARCH FRIENDLY MATCHES:

So here we go again with a brief summary and comment on our endeavours during the month of March.

1st March- Home -  was due to be played against Abingdon (Men), but alas despite being changed to a mixed match, it was, for various reasons, called off.

3rd March... Home match, our Ladies entertained Chipping norton but a close encounter saw them go down to our visitors by a margin of 56 - 67.
Our highest winning rink going to Lorraine Gaskins, Liz Sims, Carol Bloomfield and Carol Gaskins.

5th March... Home match was against Hagbourne (Men)-..loss of more browny point for yours truly, because I haven't got the result to hand…whoops! (will endeavour to find it and advise later).

7th March… Home again, for a match against the Royal Household (Men) which we won by a score of 138 - 97.
HWR going to Mark Plested, Peter Jeffries, Mervyn Gleeson and John Drage.

8th March… Home to Shiplake in a mixed match where we ran out comfortable winners by a score of 147 - 84.
HWR on this occasion going to Elaine Gethins, John Whittaker, Stella Powling and Phil Woodville.

15th March.. Our home match (mixed) was cancelled by Slade.

21st March.. Home to our friends from Oxford and District in a mixed match - we really had to struggle on this one but eventually claimed a victory by 89 - 81. HWR this time went to Bob Hands, Josie Gilbert, Trevor Gethins and Phil Woodville.

22nd March.. This time at Home to Abingdon (mixed), but still awaiting the cards….hope we won - but haven't a clue!

24th March.. Home to Foxhills (mixed)………now this was really a tight affair but it all ended in smiles for us when we just got home by 110 -109.
HWR claimed by Margaret Stacey, Eileen Smith, Keith Croxon and Phil Woodville.

My thanks to the Captains who took these games - we all know how much work goes into making things happen. A special thanks to Liz Sims who does stirling work keeping track of matters. I think we had some of our 'new' players to the game taking part for the first time - and I am pleased to know that they all came through with flying colours……but more importantly learned that they really did enjoy the experience…….keep putting your names on the board for selection folks.

As an aside I am pleased to see so many new faces joining our club - so many complete beginners who really did call in to "have a chat", they really did "have a go", they really did view "Oxford's Best Kept Secret" - and bingo, we are now pleased to have them as fellow members.

Our three coaches. Rosemary Phelps, Liz Sims and Graham Kerr all really work so hard showing them the ropes and making them feel welcome……but as they say, when they enjoy doing it, it really is their pleasure. More new faces are always welcome too.

As ever, my grateful thanks to our Web-Master Merv Gleeson for all his help and guidance on all matters 'Web-Site"…….

In the next round-up, I will announce the winners of the various indoor leagues………..and throw in any anecdotes
I can find which might broaden the scene so to speak.

So, very shortly we welcome the new outdoor season, when with our usual busy schedule we will be lucky enough to witness the whole spectrum of the 'bowling world' ranging from International (this year we are hosting the under 25 England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland series) - Middleton Cup, County, Club league, individual competitions and more……..some people just like to have a game among their friends….with our two rinks, we are well able to cope .

Thanks to Sandy Nash, we are seeing the introduction of a Wednesday Morning Outside Triples League…….do sign up for this if you haven't already done so. So far Sandy has 8 teams registered but there is time for more to join….the matches will commence on Wednesday 13th May, commencing at 10am and be 14 ends duration. This is open to bowlers from other clubs - and very welcome they will be too.

….but lets not forget, for those who enjoy the Indoor scene, the 'roll-ups' and the highly successful Wednesday Morning Indoor league will continue……….yep, it will run alongside the new Outdoor Triples league…….what a choice!

Our Indoor entertainment evening will shortly be upon us again - make a note, its is on the 11th April……a great evening and still only £5.50 to include a snack and live entertainment with Cody - popular 50s, 60s and 70's music and more…so the chance for a good old sing-a-long.

Last but not least, please remember its our Indoor AGM on Wednesday 8th April at 7pm……..please try to be there.

Happy days…..

Bob Scholes.
