JANUARY FRIENDLY MATCHES:

Having shaken off any self imposed over indulgence during the festive season, our members embarked upon a busy schedule for the month of January. As usual meeting friends both old an new, we enjoyed their company and all the matches were played in the right spirit - but of course in the world of bowls, that is nothing new.

Saturday 3rd January.
We played hosts to Kidlington and ran out winners by 108 - 84. HWR on this occasion went to Elaine Gethins, Vicky Harrison, June Watts and Peter Baskerville.

Tuesday 6th January.
Town and Gown were our visitors - another win by some 99 - 70. We won on three rinks and drew on one other. Regret I do not have the HWR names to hand.

Thursday 8th January.
Our Ladies entertained their counterparts from Oxford and District and ran out winners by 60 - 51…a close match. HWR on this occasion went to Brenda Sydenham, Vicky Harrison and Pat strange. (triple)

Saturday 10th January.
Our friends from Hagbourne were the visitors, but alas - for them - they went home empty handed having lost  129 - 68. HWR John Jarvis, Graham Kerr, Terry Gripe and Pam Faulkner.

Sunday 11th January.
This saw the return match against Avon Valley from Warwickshire…..we avenged a defeat at their club in November by running out victors on this occasion by 134 - 118. HWR was claimed by Joyce Clark, Dulcie Smith, John Jarvis and Brian Bloomfield.

Tuesday 13th January.
This was - or should have been - a Ladies match against Whiteknights, but unfortunately they had to cancel.

Saturday 17th January.
Banbury Cross were or visitors - but again another win by us, this time 130 - 87. HWR went to Vicky Harrison, Shirley Buckingham, Carol Bloomfield and Omar Shariffe.

Sunday 18th January.
We welcomed Rivermeade - but despite the score - a win by us by some 145 - 64 - this was a particularly good encounter enjoyed by all. HWR went to Alison Eastgate, Shirley Clarke, June Watts and Brian Bloomfield.

Thursday 22nd January.
Our friends from Harrow and District made the long journey to see us and a close triples match saw us just getting home by 112 - 101. HWR Kath Hadris, Shirley Buckingham and Terry Gripe.

Friday 23rd january.
This time it was a Ladies match ( 3 Rinks)….another home win for us I'm afraid  - this time the score being 73 - 49. HWR was claimed by Margaret Stacey, Pat Strange, June Watts and Carol Gaskins.

Saturday 24th January.
Witney Town were our visitors and they were better on the day - running out victors by 160 -152. Regret I do not have info re HWR.

Sunday 25th January.
PRESIDENTS DAY……..We have been blessed with many excellent Presidents and this year it is Margaret Stacey who has presided over us. Without exception Margaret has been the epitome of what a good president should be….her kindness to all and the exemplary way in which she has carried out her duties has endeared herself to us all without exception. A really great day and I will leave it to Margaret to give a flavour of the day in her "Presidents Prattle" which should be out soon.

Thursday 29th January.
We played hosts to Florence Park and another win for us by 60 - 46. HWR went to John Jarvis, Rosemary Phelps and Alison Eastgate (triples).

Over the course of the month, a special thank-you to the Captains who came forward to take these matches…..Vera Logue, Peter Baskerville, Alan Holmes, Margaret Stacey and Gary Gray and not forgetting Jeanette Berry who was due to take the cancelled match against Whiteknights………I don't need to tell you how much work and administration goes into putting a side together and etc. (if I've missed anyone out my apologies - blame Vera Logue our fixture secretary!!!!!)….

Perhaps I should sneak in a really special mention to Rosemary Phelps, Liz Sims and Graham Kerr for the splendid work they are doing - especially on Fridays and Saturdays - coaching our newer and 'learner' members - many are now coming through quite nicely and featuring in some of our matches…….the influx of new members is very encouraging indeed and seems to be growing.

Well there it is folks - as I said before, a busy schedule…..all matches being at home this month as seems per usual for January. My thanks again to Merv Gleeson, our Web-Master for all his help promoting our web-site….nearly 1500 visitors already this week. If anyone out there would like to make a contribution, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
