PRESIDENT'S PRATTLE - OCTOBER 2014

This Summer has gone by so quickly.  It doesn't seem so long ago that I was struggling to put a jack up outside let alone a wood and now when I can, it's time to put the outdoor greens to bed!  Overall though, we have had a good Summer for bowling outside with just the odd soaking here and there.

It's the time of the year now when that envelope drops through your door with a request for subscriptions together with the Yearbook.  Do read this.  The Yearbook will not only familiarise you with a good deal of what is going on in the Club throughout the Winter, it also contains General Rules, League Rules, information on Club Competitions and 'Making the game more enjoyable for everyone'.  If you are not sure about anything or would like more information, do ask any of the Club Officers.  Their names are on page 1 of the yearbook.  Or alternatively, any of the Management Committee or myself will be only too pleased to help with any queries you may have.

INDOOR SUMMER BOWLING

The Indoor Pairs Competition was won this year by Jan Cook and Stan Smith and the League by the Rowans - Captain, Tony Logue.   This should have been reported  in last month's prattle so many apologies folks, but  the news didn't filter down to me in time.

OUTDOOR MATCHES

We played three mixed matches at home in September namely Thame, Ross-on-Wye and OUP all of which were very enjoyable and a lot of fun.  Ross-on-Wye had been on tour and on their way home, rounded off their tour with a stop at City and County.  They arrived in time for a light lunch before the match, the sun shone for our game and with the usual excellent two course meal afterwards, they were very impressed with our facilities!  We also had a most enjoyable ladies match at West Oxford one evening, playing the last few ends in the twilight which all added to the fun.  Must remember to take a torch next time!!

LEAGUE CUP FINAL

Our A team came so very close to winning this final and causing an upset (fuller report elsewhere on the website) but it wasn't to be.  Very well played lads - next year will be yours.

CLUB FINALS and CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

We had a fine weekend for our Club finals and there were some very good games.  Well done all the finalists and  congratulations to the winners.

Our Mens Club Singles Champion this year is Othman Sharif and the Ladies Singles Champion is Kathy Hawes.

We were very pleased to host the Mens County Champion of Champions Competition which took place this month.  Othman, our representative, played some great games to reach the final where, in a close fought fight against Kevin Alder from West Witney, he just lost out.  Well done Othman, you did us proud.

Kathy was invited to the Senior Ladies England Trials for next season the same weekend that the County Ladies Champion of Champions Competition was held and I am very pleased to say that she has retained her place in the Senior England Squad.  Great stuff Kathy and many congratulations.

ANNUAL DINNER AND PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

This was held on Saturday 27th September and was preceded by a "friendly" match Ladies -v- Gents in the afternoon.  It was a beautiful sunny day, just right for bowling and a very enjoyable afternoon was had by all.   Victory went to the men on this occasion - well played gentlemen.

The dinner was well attended and we were very pleased to welcome the Ladies County President, Margaret Morris together with the Men's County President, Mike Andrews as our guests.  We had an excellent three course meal followed by the presentation of the trophies to the Winners and Runners Up by the two County Presidents.

INDOOR SEASON

This is now under way with the Leagues, and matches will begin soon. I look forward to seeing everyone again after the Summer break.  The carpet has already been stretched for the start of the season and for those interested is running at a speed of 18 seconds.

Please sign up for the matches which are always good fun and also give you good practice.  It's the best way to get to know other Club members and learn more about the game, so newer members, take the plunge and jump in and you "oldies" keep putting your  names up - we need you all.

CLUB NIGHT

This now reverts back to a Saturday evening each month for the Winter Season, the first one being held on SATURDAY 11th OCTOBER from about 6 p.m. with entertainment by Kev G later on in the evening.   The next Club Night will be on Saturday 1st NOVEMBER - thought I had better give you advance notice as my prattle will not be published before that date!

OPEN DAY

Following our successful Open Day in August, we are holding another one on Sunday November 2nd from 1.30 - 6 p.m.  So spread the word and encourage everyone you know to come along and see what's on offer.  Bowling equipment will be available for those who want to have a go, with "experts" on hand to offer help and advice.
