PRESIDENT'S PRATTLE - SEPTEMBER 2014

Well, what a month this has been for me - our ladies and gentlemen doing so well at Leamington, the Men's A team through to the League Cup Final and  a wonderful President's day - but more of that later.

LEAGUE CUP FINAL

Well done gentlemen - through to the final against Headington.  This will take place at Kidlington Bowls Club on Thursday 4th September at 6.15 p.m. so get along there everyone and cheer our lads on.

LADIES AND MENS NATIONALS

As I reported last month, we had representatives in all the ladies disciplines.  Carol Gaskins and Carol Penson reached the semi-finals of the Senior Pairs and after a hard fought game went into the last end just one shot adrift.  Their opponents from Sussex however, made another two shots to clinch their place in the final and they then went on to win the Championship.  Kathy Hawes reached the quarter finals of the Four Wood Singles and Gail Gilkes and Myra Lewis won through to the quarter finals of the Pairs where they battled against two Junior Internationals (Natalie Melmore and Sophie Tolchard from Devon) only losing out over the last two ends.

The icing on the cake with cherries on top, however, has to be the magnificent success of Kathy Hawes, Gail Gilkes, Donna Knight and Myra Lewis in becoming the National Fours Champions.  The quarters and semi-finals were nail biters, winning by just one shot on both occasions.  In the final however, they seemed to be cruising to victory, 20-9 up when Northants came back at our ladies and the score stood at 20-15 with two ends to go.  We sat there, holding our breaths, everything crossed. We were down - was the unthinkable going to happen?  Then Gail trailed the jack to our woods at the back and with the Northants Skip unable to find a way through, we picked up a 5 together with the trophy and one end to spare.  Very well done ladies, you were all brilliant.

Kathy's team now goes on to represent England in the fours in next year's Home Internationals against Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Isles.  This competition will be played at Leamington, so not too far for us to go and watch and give our support. When times and dates are known, they will be displayed at the Club so that you can put them in your diaries.

Oxford Mail: Mike Petersen (left) and Alan Ley, with the runners-up trophy at the National Senior Pairs Championship

Mike Petersen and Alan Ley also had great success in the Men's Senior Pairs winning right through to the final.  Another nail biter, one up going into the last end but Alan couldn't find a way through to the jack and so they dropped a 3 to become the runners up.  Well done gentlemen, you did us proud - sorry I wasn't there to cheer you on but I had, rather inconsiderately, arranged my President's Day on the same day!

PRESIDENT'S DAY 2014

I had a lovely President's day - couldn't have asked for better so thank you everyone for coming along on the day, and for your support and assistance in various ways which all contributed to a successful afternoon.  I have written a separate and fuller report which is on this website and a copy is also posted in the clubhouse.

OPEN DAY

We held a successful open day at the beginning of the month and as a result several people are having coaching lessons.  We look forward to welcoming them as members in the near future.  A fuller report of this day has also been posted on the website.

MATCHES

We have had 6 matches in August, three very enjoyable away games at Witney Town, Charlbury and Carterton. We are always made most welcome when we play away so please, please give your support on these occasions.   The other 3 matches were at home against Hagbourne (men's match), a re-arranged game against Oxford Masonic and a touring side from Shanklin.  The game against the Masonic was played indoors due to inclement weather.  We had a lovely day with the tourists from Shanklin who thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  Two further ladies matches had been fixed for this month but sadly these were cancelled by Woodstock and Banbury Borough.

CLUB NIGHT

Another very successful Club Night was held on Friday 15th August with a tasty BBQ and super side salad dishes.  Our grateful thanks must go to Colin Pollard and all his helpers, particularly his wife, 'Salad Queen' Jackie, who made this such a great evening. This was the last outdoor Club Night for this season.  The indoor Club Nights will commence on SATURDAY 11th OCTOBER  with entertainment by KEV G so make a note in your diary folks.

MENS COUNTY COMPETITIONS

I am very pleased to tell you that Paul Comley won the Longford Cup earlier this month.  Congratulations Paul.

CLUB FINALS

Our finals this year are on the weekend of 6th/7th September starting at 10 a.m. on the 6th.  Spectators very welcome - do come and help create a bit of atmosphere for our worthy finalists.  Two ladies County finals are also being played on Sunday 7th  - namely, the pairs and triples and we have representatives in both of these games.

ANNUAL DINNER AND PRESENTATION OF PRIZES

Diaries out once more folks and make a reservation for Saturday 27th September. Full details are now up in the Clubhouse and choice of menu is available.

THIS MONTH'S RIB TICKLER!!!

On a beautiful summer's day, two American tourists were driving through Wales.

At the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch they stopped for lunch and one of the tourists asked the waitress -

"Before we order, I wonder if you could settle an argument for us.

Can you pronounce where we are very, very, very slowly?"

The girl leaned over and said -

"Burrr ……… Gurr ……… King".

Have a nice day!

President Margaret
